According to Anime News Network, Love Live! The School Idol Movie has ranked number one not only its opening weekend in Japan, but during its second week as well! It evened out-performed Mad Max: Fury Road which had it’s Japanese opening this past weekend. In its opening weekend, Love Live! sold 250,000+ tickets, earning over 400,000,000 yen (about US$2.1 million). The second weekend saw a gross of over 180,000 tickets which earned over 250 million yen (about US$3,240,900)!
In comparison to other recent anime films, Love Live! has performed quite well. It outperformed the K-ON! film, which premiered in late 2011, by nearly 90 million yen on opening weekend (it opened to about US$4.054 million at the time). It fell short of the success of Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion-, though, which opened in late 2013 to a whopping 436 million yen (about US$4.47 million at the time).
For all those Love Live! fans (I know there are a lot of you) who don’t live in Japan, look for Love Live! The School Idol Movie to go international this August. Let’s hope it does as well overseas as it does at home!
