Natsumi is a small woman with a big heart. She works tirelessly at her job, and it’s given her the nickname “Hamu-chan”. Everyone in the office adores the little lady and she gets along with everyone. Except her giant of a boss, that is.

Samejima has a piercing gaze, high expectations, and is absolutely massive. Hamu tries to avoid him most of the time, but he corners her one evening in the office… and asks her to be his girlfriend!? Taken aback by his demeanor and appearance, what can Hamu do but say yes? Even though she’s a little scared of him, she’s willing to give it a shot.

There are quite a few mishaps early into their relationship due to their differences. Hamu is still a little intimidated by Same’s size and brusque attitude, and Same has difficulty expressing himself in a clear and non-scary way to Hamu. And it doesn’t help that Hamu has never had a boyfriend before. Despite the obstacles in their way, both Hamu and Same are determined to make this relationship work!

The Good

My Boss is a Giant is a very cute rom-com/grumpy sunshine story that plays on the massive size difference between the main characters.

The art is adorable. There are tons of scenes depicting Hamu as a hamster as she goes about her day or when doing things like trying on clothes, being embarrassed, or running away. The same goes for Same. In many scenes he’s shown as a scary looking shark, which further contrasts their size differences.

I really enjoyed the writing and localization as well. There are other characters whose names are plays on animals, and seeing how each character is likened to their associated animal was an entertaining aspect of the story and reminiscent of Fruits Basket (though there aren’t twelve of them and this series isn’t depressing at all). There were some cute similarities using the artwork with their animals as well, such as one showing Same’s privates as a shark, that had me giggling a bit.

The Bad

Though cute and sweet, the story overall was very boring. Many of the scenes were too predictable, and the characters felt a bit disconnected throughout the entire omnibus. By the end of the story, I couldn’t tell if Hamu and Same were actually good for each other, or if their lack of any serious relationship trouble combined with Same’s obsession with Hamu, and Hamu’s desire to be desired, just made them seem good together.

Between the simplistic plot, one dimensional characters, and the repeated scenarios, My Boss is a Giant could hardly keep my attention. It’s not that the manga is bad. On the contrary, it’s well polished and has a cute premise. It’s the execution of the plot and the utilization of the characters that made this story feel more like a side event or bonus story at the back of a manga than one that can stand on its own.

The Spice (Minor Content Spoilers)

My Boss is a Giant doesn’t make readers wait long for the spicy bits. By page 25, Hamu is getting some action, and there are only short breaks after that to develop a few plot points before the two are back in bed together.

The sex scenes are fairly typical and don’t have anything out of the ordinary. There’s a few naughty deeds done at work, but it stops before anything more than touching happens. There is another scene where Hamu and Same are in a car and have sex, though it seems that they aren’t anywhere public when it happens. All-in-all, My Boss is a Giant is pretty vanilla.

The Verdict

I’m typically a fan of grumpy sunshine stories, and while My Boss is a Giant is a great example of the trope, I found the reading boring. Even the copious amounts of sex scenes couldn’t keep my attention because so many of them felt like repeats of the previous ones. As a whole, the story is cute and sweet, and it’s normally something I would enjoy, but this one just didn’t do it for me.
