I recently saw the film Your Name and was fascinated to see kumihimo featured in it. I have been looking for images from the film online. However, in all of the visual representations and blogs I have found, the loom that Obasan is using is referred to as a Takadai. It is in fact an Ayatakedai. The form of braid that she makes on it cannot be made on an Aytakedai, but can only be made on a Takedai – I have made braids on both looms and the methods are quite different. However, the concept and use of the braids in the film really captures the magic of kumihimo.
