Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash Episode 9 (How to Rest) Review

Onwards to Cyrene Mine!

You know, work is tiring. Some days are really bad and some days are good, but nothing can beat a well deserved day off, especially for Haruhiro and his crew. Some of you might be thinking that I am going off on a tangent by talking about work and days off, but no-no, that is not the case at all. This episode of Grimgar showcases days off and more for Haruhiro and the team!

SPOILERS AHEAD! If you haven’t seen this episode, I would recommend that you stop here. If you haven’t watched the series, please have a look at my first impression of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash & Zach’s article on Why Grimgar Of Fantasy and Ash is One of the Best Shows this Season (both spoiler free)!

If someone told me that this episode was not good because of the pacing, then I would understand, but if another told me it was good because of the development, I would also understand. The first half of this episode is definitely slow, but I can appreciate it. I truly believe Grimgar is a series that has a slow start since it takes its time with the characters. Because of that, I compare it to an acquired taste. We can see this in the first half, as it has slice of life moments all over it. We see our cast on their day off; Yume climbs, Ranta fishes, Moguzo cooks, Shihoru feeds birds, and Haruhiro…eats. Again, yes, it’s slow and it can be boring to some viewers, but seeing Haruhiro and the others on their day off is a treat because we get to see what they do besides kill goblins and strategize. It’s realistic and that’s something I appreciate.

Speaking of goblins, it seems a mob of them have infiltrated Haruhiro’s hunting ground, Damuro, so going there would be dangerous for them. This leads the team to change the hunting grounds to Cyrene Mine, which is the same place where Mary lost her teammates. I like how Grimgar handles trauma. It knows that trauma is not something that can be dealt with in a day; it takes time to heal and to move on, but with the help of others, that process can be smoother. This is evident when Mary and Haruhiro talk it out. You see, Mary hasn’t forgotten about that day, I mean, who would? But, despite that, she feels as long as she is with her friends, she will be able to pull through the depths of Cyrene Mine. I know I have said it before, but itss moments like these that help add character, and for this case, it’s Mary. We have seen her at her worst and now she has opened up to the team and actually feels like a member who can be there for her friends and rely on them at times.

The latter half of the episode was mostly buildup and slight progression for what is to come soon. If you can tolerate the fan service, seeing Haruhiro actually trying to learn the spider technique was nice, along with knowing a little more on why Haruhiro can locate critical spots on enemies. Despite being a slow episode, we did get to see characterization and hear catchy music to boot. It’s obvious Cyrene Mine will be no joking matter with all the intensity around it. Since goblins were tough to begin with, I wonder what else awaits Haruhiro and the team!
