    You forgot Michiko and Hatchin, Darker than BLACK which was set in Japan, Brazil and Russia, and some other parts of the world. Furthermore, anime can be set anywhere, but the challenge comes from creating those settings and environments.

    Well said, people write what they know and what the audience knows. If you are setting a story in a place that the audience isn’t familiar with then you have to take the time to explain basic aspects of the location. This is fine if your setting your story in a fantasy setting but if your going to set it in a real place then you might as well set it in a place that doesn’t require explanation. This is why in America most shows are set in New York City, LA, or on navel base.
